Unsteady Filtration

University of Stuttgart, Institut für Mechanische Verfahrenstechnik is working on unsteady Filtration and their influence of unsteady operating conditions on filtration mechanisms.

Used Approach (Software, Numerics, Modelling)

Filters play an important role for the separation of solid particles from gas flows by the help of a porous medium. In order to fulfill their function intended, they are subjected test procedures, which are described in standards. However limit values and standards refer to the stationary operating condition and so do filtration models in literature. In the reality filters are often subjected to transient flows and conditions, e.g. when they are used to clean the pulsating intake air of combustion engines.

Goal of the research project is to identify the influence of transient conditions on the fundamental filtration mechanisms. Therefore the oscillation and deformation of the fibers inside a filter due to a pulsating flow must be taken into account by the help of fluid structure interaction.

The CFD Code Fluent and FEM Code Abaqus will be coupled by the help of MpCCI. Filtration models will be implemented in Fluent by user defined functions.
