FNB - Institute for Numerical Methods in Mechanical Engineering

MpCCI is used in fluid-structure interaction at the Institute for Numerical Methods in Mechanical Engineering (FNB) of Technical University Darmstadt. The research focuses on a variety of FSI problems in mechanical engineering.

FSI problems in mechanical engineering

Coupling FASTEST and FEAP

The CFD program FASTEST3D is developed at the institute, while the FEM program FEAP belongs to U.C. Berkely. MpCCI-interface was implemented in both programs and the coupling mechanism of FASTEST3D and FEAP was verified with a testcase: a laminar oscillating inflow with a flexible membrane. Then a further investigation of FSI was carried out with testcases involving large structural deformation and severe grid distortions in fluid field, where the elliptic grid smoothing technique must be used.

Projects

At present there are a couple of turbulent FSI projects at the institute. One is about thermal fluid-structure coupling in aircraft engines, thus a high thermal stress will be simulated. The other is about FSI in labyrinth seals where the compressibility of fluid should be considered.

Expected Results

Our goal is to improve the coupling computation of FASTEST3D and FEAP with emphasis on FASTEST3D, so that more complex FSI problems can be simulated with higher stability, accuracy and efficiency.
